Hong Kong Travel Guide: Skyscrapers, Neon Streets, and Island Trails
Navigate Hong Kong like a pro with a 3-to-4-day urban and nature guide. From the classic Victoria Peak vistas to street food crawls in Mong Kok and unexpected coastal hikes.
Where to Base Yourself: Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Wan Chai
Hong Kong’s world-class transit system (the MTR) connects the city perfectly, but choosing the right side of Victoria Harbour alters your daily vibe.
Day 1–2: Harbor Classic Vistas and Kowloon Culture
Begin your first morning by taking the historic Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central—one of the cheapest and most scenic boat rides in the world. From Central, ride the Peak Tram up to Victoria Peak to get the classic panoramic view of the skyscraper skyline against the lush green mountains.
As night falls, cross back to Kowloon and head to Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei. Walk through the bustling stalls of the Ladies' Market and the Temple Street Night Market. Stop at a traditional Cha Chaan Teng (Hong Kong cafe) for a cup of silk-stocking milk tea and pineapple buns with cold butter, or feast on spicy garlic crab at a roadside Dai Pai Dong.
Ensure smooth transits across the city by picking up your Octopus card and airport express tickets in advance via the Klook Destination Booking Hub.
Day 3–4: Outlying Islands and Coastal Escapes
Hong Kong is over 70% green space. On Day 3, escape the concrete jungle by taking a ferry from Central Pier 4 to Lamma Island. Hike the easy family trail from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan, passing through sleepy fishing villages, banana plantations, and ending at open-air seafood restaurants overlooking the bay.
Alternatively, head to Lantau Island to ride the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car up to the giant Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. Combine this with a visit to Tai O Fishing Village, where the Tanka boat people still live in historic stilt houses over the water.
